How to grow as a starting (student) stylist

The industry has changed a lot compared to the past. Back in the days, there was less competition and way more job opportunities. And going to a prestige fashion school won’t open many doors for you - unlike in the past.

We live in a world where everyone can call themselves a stylist by just putting it in their instagram bio, get customers and exposure.

But how does one grow and distinguish themselves from competitors?

In this article; you will find some tips and tricks on how to grow as a stylist and putting yourself on the map.

Start assisting!

I don’t know how many times this has to be told but start learning from an experienced stylist! Even if you also study fashion styling. Imagine how many steps ahead you are if you also assist next to your studies. Additionally, imagine how many contacts of other experienced creatives you will make.

Avoid the full looks and experiment!

At a certain point in your career, you will start requesting looks from brands with full looks policies which is an easy way of doing your work. However, before that; start to request looks which don’t have that. It’s always easy to style a full look but it’s much more difficult to style a look in something new and still make it look amazing! Not only will you stand out more but you will also push and train your aesthetic.

Get yourself into parties and events

Get yourself in places where all the big names come! Shake their hands, tell them about yourself and let them know you exist! Be yourself though and find the right people who can help you after you graduate. Remember; even if you are at a party; you are not there to party and get drunk! You are there to shake hands and find new contacts so don’t get wasted.

The fashion industry is tough and it is hard to survive without the right people around you. Follow these tips and keep manifesting and everything will come to you when the time is right.
